You won’t believe some of the numbers behind Virgil van Dijk’s big-money move to Liverpool

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk will finally get his dream move to Liverpool.

I mean, we assume it’s a “dream”, considering Southampton players more often than not find themselves moving to Anfield at some point.

According to the folks over at the Telegraph, the Dutchman will join the Reds in a world record £75 million fee for a defender.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been chasing the hard-tackling centre-back for an age, with a potential deal between the two club’s supposedly breaking down over the summer.

One happy Van

And some of the numbers surrounding this deal has had us running to what’s left of the Christmas wine.

For starters, £75m far exceeds the world record transfer for a defender, which was previously set by Manchester City when they forked out £54m for Kyle Walker in the summer.

The deal is also the second most expensive transfer in Premier League history, level with the £75m Man United spent on Romelu Lukaku.

United’s £90m purchase of Paul Pogba remains the price to beat, of course.

Klopp has finally got the defender he wanted

What’s more, van Dijk’s reported salary of £180,000-a-week will be more than double the amount Spurs duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld make combined, if you can believe it.

So, what’s next?

Well, the Saints have a rather large cheque coming their way.

According to the Telegraph’s Jeremy Wilson, they’ll use a large bit of that to buy a new striker in January.

Bit more detail on Van Dijk deal. It's £70m, rising to around £75m. Southampton wanted big chunk up front as they plan to be active in January too and want to get an attacker in quickly.
