Jose Mourinho mocks previous Man United defeats in astonishing post-match rant

Learn to read a room, Jose.

In the aftermath of major disappointing defeat, most managers would avoid bragging about their past achievements while simultaneously opening old wounds of the club who pays their wage.

But this is Jose Mourinho we’re talking about; the self-proclaimed Special One.

Having parked the bus in the first leg against Sevilla, the Portuguese gaffer watched on as Man United were dumped out of the Champions League at Old Trafford in the round of 16 courtesy of two goals from Wissam Ben Yedder.

Who would have thought starting Marouane Fellaini alongside Nemnaja Matic in midfield would lead to lack of incision?

Forget the tactical blunders for a moment though, and indulge in Mourinho’s post-match assessment…

“I’ve sat in this chair twice before; with Porto, Man United out; with Real Madrid, Man United out. So this is nothing new for this football club.”

In a way, we should marvel at such brazen self-service; you don’t see this in normal day-to-day life.

It didn’t end there though…

“I don’t have regrets,” he said without a hint of a smirk. “I did my best, the players did their best, we tried, we lost and that’s football.

“I said that it would be a disappointment if we lost the match.

“I don’t want to make a drama of it, we don’t have time, we have a match on Saturday, we have no time to be sad for more than 24 hours and that’s football, it is not the end of the world.”

If Mourinho and the players both performed to their maximum capacity, is he suggesting that Sevilla (currently 5th in La Liga with 11 losses and a goal difference of -6) are simply a better side than United?

How Mourinho can’t admit his approach was flawed is utterly baffling.

Or at least it would be baffling if it weren’t the kind of response we have come to expect from him.

A night to forgetEPA

Mourinho rightfully soaked up the plaudits for a tactical masterclass against Liverpool at the weekend.

His game plan in that fixture was spot on and has laid the blueprint for future opponents of Jurgen Klopp’s troops.

But as good as United were against Liverpool, they were at least as bad against Sevilla.

And for Mourinho to gloat about his past victories over United shows a disconnect from the fans that has the potential to create a toxic atmosphere at Old Trafford in the future.

Oh Jose… Jose, Jose, Jose.
