Paul Merson is comparing loads of Premier League teams to a bag of Revels and we love it
Pundits often get a hard time of it.
They say things in the heat of the moment that can be pulled apart afterwards.
But sometimes they come up with nuggets of metaphorical gold that live long in the memory.

The latest soundbites coming from the double Premiership and FA Cup winner are liquid commentary.
It sounds like Merse has found a new favourite metaphor that is taking 2017 by storm.

Now the trick of the words here is that a bag of Revels contains several different types of chocolate and you don’t know what you will get when they come out.
Even a wordsmith of William Shakespeare’s calibre would be proud of this.
Using it once as a nice turn of phrase would keep readers and viewers interested and paint a nice picture of what you mean.
But Merson has gone wild with this one, wheeling it out on no less than FIVE separate occasions.
He has also invented a word by using Revel as an adjective – ‘Revel-ly’.
And in one case he used the word literally before describing the team as a bag of Revels, implying Everton players were actually a selection of coffee, orange and crispy chocolates.
We live for this level of elite punditry.
Not only is Merson pulling out amazing phrases like this on a regular basis on Sky Sports, he also signed for Welsh Football League Division Three outfit Caerau.
Good on you, Paulie.
