But it could have been so much more had Vahid Amiri not squandered an unbelievable chance by shooting wide in the dying minutes.

After a mix up that nearly allowed Joao Mario to score, Saeed Afagh and goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand were involved in a heated clash that nearly escalated.

It wasn’t quite Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer at Newcastle levels of rage, but for a moment it looked particularly hairy for the Iranians.
They managed to compose themselves – it’s just a shame Amiri couldn’t do the same at the other end right at the death.
